Marketplace ministry makes a lot of founders wince, because they picture the cringe version — forced tracts, awkward speeches, faith used as a sales tactic. But the real thing is quieter and far more powerful: living so honestly and lovingly at work that people start asking why.
Let your work be the first sermon
Long before you say a word, the way you run your company preaches. Do you keep promises? Treat the intern like the investor? Handle a mistake with humility? Excellence and integrity earn the right to be heard.
"Let your light shine before others, that they may see your good deeds and glorify your Father in heaven."
Matthew 5:16
Be ready, be normal
Scripture says to always be prepared to give a reason for your hope — with gentleness and respect. That is not a pitch; it is a posture. Be genuinely interested in people, be honest about your own faith when it comes up, and let the Spirit do the convincing.
A few guardrails
- Never use your authority to pressure employees. Coercion is the opposite of the gospel.
- Serve without strings. Love that expects conversion in return is not love.
- Be the same person in the meeting and in the parking lot.
The marketplace is not a lesser mission field. For most of us, it is the main one.
